Updated on July 2, 2009

Addicted to Caffeine?

An addiction is an overwhelming desire for drugs, caffeine is no exception.

The addiction can be limited to the mental component, but may be physiological, if the way the body works has changed over a prolonged use of a substance.

In many cases, the addict will experience physical withdrawal symptoms without the substance.

As in the case of caffeine addiction, the lack of it is a very common cause of mild to severe headaches.

Other common caffeine withdrawal symptoms include headaches, fatigue or drowsiness, depression and irritability, lack of concentration and flu-like symptoms of nausea, vomiting and muscle pain or stiffness.

In general, the more the caffeine you consume, the worse the withdrawal symptoms are. The withdrawal effects from coffee are the same as for caffeinated soft drinks.
